Reasons to stay alive-In Earnest review

Today I’m reviewing the EP ‘Reasons To Stay Alive’ by in earnest!

This past year there have been quite a few emotional tracks and albums that have been released mostly due to the pandemic and all the emotions that have been felt because of that.

People try to avoid topics such as mental health because it can be heavy and a lot to take in and talk about but personally I think that sometimes it only takes one person to share their experiences and to talk about their struggles to help millions of people feel less alone.

In earnest is a UK based sad indie band that focuses their music heavily on the topic of mental health. The trio is fueled by songwriters Sarah Holburn and Tom Eatherton and the band not only hopes to focus music on mental health but also on other underrepresented topics.

This EP has 6 tracks that flow into a continuously loop into each other to make a full circle. The songs are acoustically driven with the amazing additions of violins and focus on different topics having to do with mental health such as depression, anxiety, gratitude and more.Although the topics are a bit heavy I find the songs to be really calming and serene.

This entire EP was filled with subtle details that I enjoyed such as the cover art for the EP that matches the names of the songs and the background noise that kind of sounds like something rewinding that represents looking back at past thoughts in ‘the days in between’ which really shows just how much thought and effort in earnest put into each track.

Personally although I thought every song in this wonderful EP was amazing in its own way my absolute favorite was ‘the days in between’, (‘Comforts of home’ was quite a close second!)

Being the first track of the EP it had a first impression that really stuck with me throughout the rest of the songs and the opening line of the track “I really believe I should have died last year” was my favorite lyric in the entire EP.To put it simply and honestly if a song could feel like a hug, ‘the days in between’ would be it.

Overall a I give ‘reasons to stay alive’ 8.8/10 slices. This EP was definitely an emotional listening experience but that’s what made it absolutely incredible. ‘Reasons to stay alive’ is planning to be accompanied by a 23 minute short film coming out this November, I can only imagine how amazing the short film will be! If you like albums like ‘Inside’ by Mother Mother and ‘Punisher’ by Phoebe Bridgers then you should definitely give this EP a try!
