Lonely-Sam Mcgurk review

Today I’m reviewing ‘Lonely’ by Sam Mcgurk!

Sam Mcgurk is based in Manchester, with influences ranging from the likes of Jake Bugg, Elliott Smith, Bob Dylan and Stephen Fretwell. This is Sam Mcgurk’s second release since the release of his first album "Outside Saint Bride".

His first album was released in August of 2017, directly inspired by the magic of the Welsh valleys in Pembrokeshire where he inherently wrote many of the songs when he was 16.

The somewhat grim lyrics of ‘Lonely’ posses a joyful undertone to them and they fit perfectly in line with the slow, soft and sweet melody and folk like sound. In the description of the song Sam Mcgurk stated ‘Lonely’ was created out of the desperation in lockdown that we all faced, delving into emotion feelings of loneliness and isolation.’

The way I interpret the lyrics is that it’s about being in the inevitable presence of loneliness and not wanting everyone around you and also yourself to feel isolated but you kind of just watch it happen anyways without much control over it.

I think this song captures the exact feeling of hanging out with your friends on thanksgiving break. It’s a very randomly specific thing to say and it probably sounds crazy but you just have to listen to it and see what I’m talking about.

My favorite element from ‘Lonely’ is the guitar.I think it’s very striking in the best way, especially when it’s the first thing you hear at the beginning of the song and it’s almost somehow catchy and gets stuck in your head.

Overall I give ‘Lonely’ 7/10 slices! If you like singers like Cavetown you’ll probably really like it! This song comes out tomorrow on July 30th so keep your eyes peeled!
