Interview with The Stylus Method

Today I had the opportunity to talk to The Stylus Method and do a short interview about their debut album that was just released ‘Telephone Voices’!

The Stylus Method is a 60’s inspired indie rock band. If you’re like me and you don’t really listen to much music from the 60’s-70’s era you might be thinking ‘Telephone Voices’ might not be for you but don’t be so quick to judge! With catchy tunes and vintage vibes The Stylus Method manages to capture the sound of the 60’s and also to provide a unique and distinguished sound of their own!

Personally I think I like them more than the Beatles (that’s just my opinion though, Beatles fans don’t come after me)

You we’re obviously inspired by the music of the 60’s was there any particular 60’s artists you were all inspired by?

Although it is kind of the obvious choice, the beatles have defintley been our key influence! I think you can defintley hear that in songs like Sugar Plum Mary! However some of the more raw guitar tones take a lot of inspiration from the kinks! So I would say those two are defintley our main influences from the 60s!

Was this album recorded during the pandemic? And did it impact your creative process or the music in any way?

So all the songs that you hear in the album had actually been in the works since late 2019! Luckily much of the recording for them had been done prior to the pandemic, although there were bits and pieces such a guitar solos and backing vocals that were missing which we had to record individually and send across to each other. As you can imagine that was a real pain and did mean we ended up releasing the album a lot later than expected! Thankfully though it did not have any impact on the quality of the album which our bassist, jamie, did a fantastic job on producing! Due to much of the writing being done with each other in person the creative process wasnt effected too much thankfully!

What inspired this album?

Were very fortunate in the band to have two very talented song writers in jordan, one of our guitarists, and our bassist jamie! That defintley adds to the uniqueness of the album and gives it some variation! The themes of the songs are of isolation, overcoming adversity and cynicism with accepting norms and perceived success. Those themes, the pandemic and having to finish the album essentially over the phone gave the album its name, "Telephone Voices"

How would you describe your sound?

That's a really good question! I've never really thought about it before as weve always just said we're 60s inspired indie rock! But I think a good way of describing our sound is modern retro! We'd also like to think we've made quite an original sound!

What is your favorite song from Telephone Voices?

Much like a lot of the feedback weve received on the album everyone seems to have a different favourite song from the album! However there are some song such as Where is the Bee Gent and The Sign which we really enjoy playing! However in terms of the amount of streams the songs have had "Sugar Plum Mary" seems to be a bit of a fan favourite!

As for us we dont necessarily have a favourite song but there are songs which have more fun playing than others!

And lastly, what are your future plans for The Stylus Method?

So we're currently working on some new material and getting together a new set list for when we can start gigging again! Weve got a gig coming up in october which were really looking forward too! Weve also got a crowdfund up and running at the moment to raise money to release Telephone Voices on vinyl, so hopefully we can make that happen by the end of the year too!

If you like bands like IDKHOW or The Beatles then you’ll definitely love The Stylus Method! As said in the interview they have a Kickstarter running to raise money to release ‘Telephone Voices’ on vinyl which I will link below which you should donate to if you can!
